Working Hard At The US Open

Happy beginning of the Labor Day Weekend for those of you celebrating here in the U.S.

I’m going to celebrate the start of Labor Day myself by…working.

But if you happen to be in the NYC area and are planning to attend the US Open tennis tournament, don’t forget your drone umbrella.

In the Niculescu/Pennetta match last evening, a quadracopter drone sneaked into the upper bleachers and failed to break serve, crashing into some empty seats.

Fortunately, nobody was hurt, but the alleged drone driver, a Brooklyn public school teacher, was arrested for “reckless endangerment.”

But wayward drones aren’t the only technology appearing on the US Open scene.

Behind the scenes in Flushing Meadows, IBM technology is hard at work, capturing data in real time from the courts, helping umpires enter live match stats electronically, feeding scoreboards across the grounds, and even keeping USOpen.org up to the second with match information and scoring.

“Data is at the heart of the US Open digital experience,” explains Noah Syken, IBM’s vice president for global sponsorship.

IBM is using analytics to help the USTA uncover tournament, match and player insights in real time, with technology like IBM Streams following the tournament data feed and identifying records and milestones and then alerting USTA editorial and social teams so they may post relevant content instantly.

Check out this ibm.com feature story to learn more about all the work going on behind the scenes helps ensure tennis fans around the globe can better follow all the action on the courts.

And if you’re celebrating the long Labor Day weekend, enjoy yourself — just be sure to keep one eye on the sky, especially if you’re at a large sporting event with no roof!
